Our Unforgettable Journey to Peru: Michael and Olivia Johnson’s Adventure

In 2024, my husband Michael and I embarked on a 15-day trip to Peru that we had booked from our home in Washington D.C. We had been eagerly anticipating this adventure for months, and it exceeded all our expectations. During our trip, we had the pleasure of visiting some of the most incredible places in the country, including the Huacachina Oasis, Colca Canyon, Machu Picchu, Humantay Lake, and, since we were there in June, we had the unique opportunity to witness the Inti Raymi celebration.

Our first stop was the Huacachina Oasis, a small desert paradise surrounded by towering sand dunes. We spent our time there sandboarding, riding dune buggies, and relaxing by the oasis, soaking in its beauty. Next, we headed to the Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest canyons. The breathtaking views and the sight of the majestic Andean condors soaring above the canyon were unforgettable.

The highlight of our trip was, without a doubt, Machu Picchu. The ancient Inca citadel, nestled high in the Andes mountains, was awe-inspiring. We spent hours exploring the ruins, learning about the history and culture of the Inca people, and marveling at the engineering and architectural feats of this remarkable civilization.

After Machu Picchu, we journeyed to Humantay Lake, a stunning turquoise lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The hike to the lake was challenging but rewarding, as the scenery was absolutely mesmerizing. We took our time at the lake, appreciating the tranquility and the beauty of the landscape.

As luck would have it, our trip coincided with the Inti Raymi festival, an ancient Inca celebration honoring the sun god. We were fortunate enough to attend the vibrant festivities, complete with traditional music, dances, and colorful costumes. The energy and passion of the performers were truly captivating, making this experience one we will never forget.

Now, at the ages of 60 and 58, Michael and I cherish these memories more than ever. Our journey to Peru was an unforgettable experience, filled with adventure, beauty, and a deeper understanding of the rich history and culture of this incredible country. We are grateful for the memories and the stories we have to share with our friends and family, and we hope to return to Peru someday to continue exploring its wonders.
