The Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca is one of the mountains located in the Vilcanota mountain range and from this place, you can see the snowy peak of Ausangate. Visitors are attracted to this place because of the colorful natural landscape due to the presence of stones and minerals sedimented by wind and water erosion. Here’s some useful information on the things you should bring in your backpack so you can fully enjoy this impressive attraction.
What to bring to enjoy the adventure to the fullest
The first thing to keep in mind is that the Seven Colored Mountain tour is only one day, so it’s not necessary to bring too many belongings and/or too much luggage since big backpacks or luggage stay at your hotel.
Bring a daypack with the following items:
- Warm clothes: The tour to the Rainbow Mountain is not so chilly, especially if it’s a sunny day. However, remember that it gets cold at the top of the mountain, so you should bring a light but warm jacket, a sweater, a scarf, a hat, and your wool gloves that will help you protect yourself while taking your best photos or just enjoying the Vinicunca mountain landscape.
- Food: Bring mineral water to stay hydrated, some snacks such as nuts, chocolates, candies, cookies, etc. These will help you recover the energy demanded by the hike.
- Other personal items: Rain poncho, sunglasses, sunscreen, trekking shoes, and/or additional shoes or sandals to rest your feet on the bus.
- Money: Don’t forget to bring some extra soles for your personal expenses such as snacks, mineral water, sodas, horse service, and tips.
IMPORTANT: Remember that many of these products can also be found on site, so if you prefer to support the locals, you can buy them from them and avoid bringing them from Cusco.
If you’re traveling in June, you can take a tour on June 24th, which is the Inti Raymi or Sun God festival, and do the Rainbow Mountain tour before or after the Inti Raymi.
Get ready for the rainy season!
For the rainy season: November, December, January, February, and March, it is recommended to include an extra pair of sneakers, shoes, or sandals that you will leave in the transport vehicle (Van, Bus, or Car) until your return after the wet hike. Also, bring an additional sweater or polo to avoid the possibility of catching a cold or similar.”
